The Friendly Duck’s Decoy Room

I swear to blog, I have never in my expansive 36-year-old life seen so many damned liquor bottles on display. At least that is, for a dive bar. Leave it to Bandito Betty and me to stumble upon a metaphorical glass decanter metropolis called The Friendly Duck’s Decoy Room on

Historic dining

Maxwell’s Speakeasy + Lounge at 454 St. Helens is a brilliant confluence of elements. The recently opened hangout occupies the first floor of the newly renovated Walker apartments, and is equal parts style, class and comfort. Its clean, pseudo-art deco interior is misleadingly chic. Despite its posh interior, when it

Evil is not a primary color. That is the point of the Wachowski brothers’ video-arcade treatment of Speed Racer, insofar as one can be determined. Blue, you can trust. Red and yellow, black and white — they’re all decent visible wavelengths. It’s purple you have to watch out for. This

It’s in the stars

There’s kind of an unwritten rule about romantic comedies that is pretty much a given. No matter how formulaic the script or pedestrian the direction or even how silly the basic premise, if the audience falls in love with the main stars as much as the characters are supposed to

Atmosphere

As a good ol’ Midwest girl, I must represent when it comes to Midwest hip-hop. Sure, the East and West Coasts have something going for them, but it’s the heartland of the United States that must be commended for the blossoming hip-hop scene that burst through the often snow-covered farmland.

Artrageous!

Bobble Tiki didn’t have a very enjoyable high school experience. In retrospect, it’s not surprising. For one, Bobble Tiki was the only grass skirt wearing, island-themed souvenir in his class. That alone made for plenty of name calling and ridicule. Secondly, Bobble Tiki hated school. Plain and simple. Bobble Tiki

Keeping it fresh

If you haven’t heard, the Posies are turning 20 years old, and they’re celebrating with a string of Northwest shows to celebrate the occasion. They’ll bring that celebration to Hell’s Kitchen Wednesday, May 14. In honesty, events like these always make me feel a little retrospective — and a lot old.

It’s a win-win situation as spring approaches our City of Destiny. Colorful trees are in full bloom, visually enhancing the beautiful historic streets of Tacoma. And although this wreaks havoc on the nostrils of most allergy sufferers, tissue sales support a much needed economic boost. PLUS 1 Tacoma Art Museum celebrated
