Living the glamorous life

An actor’s life is not an easy one. Days are long. Nights are even longer. The pay is small even when there is money to be made. But for a collection of South Sound thespians, life would be empty without it. These are their stories: John Munn John Munn is sort of

Gypsy is an origin story, as blunt and deliberate as you'll find in any comic book. Super-stripper Gypsy Rose Lee gets her full powers when she finally stands up to Mama Rose, who pushed her daughter into vaudeville first and then into the seedy bump-and-grind world of burlesque. Supposedly, Lee

Sister Girlfriend reeks of unironic cool

Hall & Oates is one of those bands that it's very easy to scoff at: the dumb hair and mustaches, the painfully sincere music and the blue-eyed soul. Still, in this era of post-irony, where hipsters are able to enjoy cheesy music without ever having to keep it at arm's

Monday, March 23: Sister Girlfriend

Now that indie music has increasingly begun to incorporate pop music into its life, we've found ourselves at an interesting crossroad, where the underground no longer has any fear of selling out or sounding too corporate; instead, bands have folded Top 40 sounds into their brand of uncompromising idiosyncrasy, resulting

Sunday, March 22: Julia Dream

Here are the things that I know about Julia Dream: they have taken their name from a Pink Floyd song; they are a Korean psychedelic band; they take their Pink Floyd and psychedelia seriously; they are solely devoted to making your brain do backflips. Every song of theirs is designed

Tuesday, March 24: Religious Girls

Oakland trio Religious Girls is gospel music for noise. Praising everything both beautiful and abrasive, Religious Girls are fascinated with taking clattering and chanting and making it a main character. Eardrums are pummeled, pupils are dilated, and minds are expanded to the place where they can receive that glut of
