The annual ritual of spring cleaning provides an opportunity to prep the flower beds, reorganize the garage and cleaning up around the house. With that said, however, the season also lends itself into putting one's money house in order.

This may mean taking the time to look over financial accounts, from credit cards to checking accounts to retirement savings plans. At America's Credit Union (ACU), every staff member shares the goal of fully making this review as thorough and rewarding for all of its military members.

"My connection to the military runs deep as a dedicated Army spouse," began Julie Castro, the branch manager for both the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Main and Spanaway branches. "Whether stationed at overseas bases or serving at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, I have gained invaluable experience and insights into the unique challenges and needs of military families."

She added that when she began her career 28 years ago in the finance industry, she ultimately want to serve with a credit union that shares her dedication to its customers. After researching the industry, Castro discovered America's Credit Union and immediately identified with its mission.

"It aligned perfectly with my desire to assist fellow military families and the local community. Joining forces with ACU felt like a natural fit," Castro explained.

Which means she has a pretty good idea as to what to do during one's financial spring cleaning.

"Regularly reviewing your finances in crucial," she said, "and this is especially so amidst our busy lives.

Castro suggests the following:

  • Take a moment to sit down and take a good look as to where your money is going by listing all your expenses and then craft a budget plan
  • Review your subscriptions (for example, Netflix or Amazon Prime); what was once necessary might not be anymore; often overlooked are free trials that have not been canceled
  • Start setting financial goals, even small ones, and then stick to them
  • Pay yourself first by allocating funds towards a savings account
  • Establish short-term goals like setting aside money for holiday expenses or creating an emergency fund for unexpected situations
  • Start now, procrastination is not a sound financial plan

"At ACU, our staff is highly skilled in assisting our members with saving and planning strategies," Castro added. "Working closely with our members, we provide tailored recommendations and options to help them achieve their financial goals."

Members are free to visit any of the following America's Credit Union's 13 branches:  DuPont Branch, Lakewood Branch, Yelm Branch, Main/Fort Lewis Branch, Lacey Branch, Yelm Walmart Branch, North Fort Branch, University Place Branch, Proctor Branch, Madigan Branch, South Tacoma Branch, Graham Branch and the Spanaway Branch.

"Whether you're starting up your children's finances or re-evaluating your own financial status, we are here to assist every step of the way," concluded Castro. "Your financial well-being is our priority, and we are dedicated to serving you."

Spring cleaning never looked so good.
