For close to a quarter of a century, the Madigan Foundation has steadfastly, and consistently, labored to make the lives of servicemembers, their families, retirees, and the Madigan Army Medical Center's staff better and healthier.

Created in 1995, the nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation is unique in the community of military medicine.

"The Foundation is a team of caring community members that go above and beyond assisting those in great need," wrote immediate past president and retired Col. David Soma, in an email.

Each year, the foundation grants $60,000 to $75,000 in support of the Madigan Army Medical Center, its staff, military patients, and to soldiers and their families through programs focused on providing excellent quality of care while improving quality of life in the military community.

"The Madigan Foundation's Patient and Family Support programs work to close the gap for uncovered clinical and health-related service for those in need," wrote Rachanee Curry, the foundation's president, in an email.

"These programs include sponsoring dental screening at Joint Base Lewis-McChord schools, as well as emphasis in optometry, oncology, the emergency room and many other departments."

She also added that the Foundation provides added support for military children requiring pediatric services, as well as JBLM CARES, the Young Heroes Program and scholarships.

"There are several programs outside the hospital walls offering respite care, as well as a beautiful set of services provided by the Madigan Palliative Care program," Curry continued.

She also said the foundation is proud to support the continued excellence of the medical care staff at Madigan, the offering of scholarships for continuing education, and the annual Gamble Lecture and Research/Fellowship awards.

Operated by volunteers, the foundation works to meet the needs of those needing help. Sometimes help means covering the cost of a baby's special formula that costs $800 per month, but is not covered by insurance.

At other points it means assisting young soldiers in finishing their nursing education, and then having them share their knowledge with their fellow soldiers.

One hundred percent of every dollar received through Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is used to further the foundation's mission.

Its CFC donation number is 92486.
