Officials from Joint Base Lewis-McChord briefed the community as part of their regular community outreach; the somewhat abbreviated briefing was held a week earlier than regularly scheduled due to scheduling conflicts. Following are some of yesterday's highlights.

From the Chaplain:
Register children or volunteers for this summer's "Cave Quest" Vacation Bible School happening at both Lewis North and McChord Field July 18-22, 9 a.m.-noon.  Email jblmvbs2016@gmail.com for more details, or follow on Facebook at jblmvbs2016.

From MWR:
Funding streams differ for events and services on JBLM.  To that end, when events or services aren't funded through Appropriated Funds or Non-Appropriated Funds, they risk being lost if not used.  One such service that is currently at risk, having been placed on a "performance improvement plan," is The Bistro at American Lake.  Servicemembers and families are being encouraged to patronize the restaurant to keep it around.

Armed Forces Day, happening on JBLM, will be open to the public and will take place on May 21, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free; the event will feature a CrossFit competition at 10 a.m. and will include a Volksmarch/ Volksbike,  kids' activities, military displays, historical reenactments, and of course foods.

Don't forget about MWR Outdoor Recreation when planning summer activities: sign up for a diverse roster of activities, from rafting, kayaking, and Stand-up Paddleboarding to Bella Donna ladies-only trips, to hiking, biking and photography.  Contact JBLMmwr.com for a list of events and registration.

Upcoming golf events at Whispering Firs Golf Course will include Mother's Day golf May 8, with $8 greens fees all day for all mothers, and Father's Day Golf June 19, with twilight greens fees all day for fathers.

The Northwest Adventure Center will hold its annual Open House and Yard Sale, with new and used equipment for sale in addition to a fish pond, climbing and more.

The Sesame Street/USO experience will have two free-admission shows, June 3 and 4 at Evergreen Theater.

There will be a Joint Base Safety Exposition at the MWR Festival Tent May 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with safety and health demonstrations as well as awareness programs and more.

From Madigan Army Medical Center:
There have been changes to the Urgent Care referrals: now soldiers and family members under Tricare Prime are authorized two urgent care visits without a referral.  For more information, go to www.tricare.mil.

Family members are urged to remember that they can receive eye checks through the military; it's not just an active-duty benefit.

From Housing:
Equity housing has transitioned to Lincoln Military Housing. There had been issues with website navigation with regards to maintenance but those have been resolved.

Further information about housing experiences on post is being solicited through a survey disseminated by Headquarters; on-base residents can take the survey at www.celassociates.com/takeyoursurvey; click on Army RCI residents (856-16) and complete the survey for eligibility to win a prize; the first round of prize drawings is scheduled for April 29.

From Transition Services:
Soldiers and family members are encouraged to attend the "Gaining the Corporate Edge" executive symposium, happening May 4 at the American Lake Conference Center.  A key feature of this event will be the "reverse job fair," where representatives from Amazon, Starbucks, Boeing, Alaska Airlines, and the Port of Seattle will be on-hand to offer insights for job attainment.  The event begins at 9 a.m., with the job seeker symposium beginning at 1 p.m.  Go to www.sfl-tap.mil for more information and registration.
