Biography

Who are...Trees and Timber? - Part 1

What more can be said about Trees and Timber, the jet-propelled rock outfit that now seems poised to take the country by storm? My editors put that question to me and gave me the assignment of a lifetime: follow the band around town to get the real inside scoop.

When I pull up to the studio where the band writes and records, mastermind songwriter, guitar slinger and singer Joe greets me outside. He’s overhauling his classic ‘76 Chevy Nova this afternoon with about three or four other guys, equally as masculine. “Good afternoon!” he belts out, in the same dreamy voice that keeps the girls paying attention. Here comes his better half, uber bassist and style leader Gwen, dashing out with a tray of finger foods and hard lemonade. She’s dressed to the nines in an outfit that would make Gloria Vanderbilt blush. “Refreshments, anyone?” as all heads turn--she’s definitely kicking up the dust in her trademark white alligator boots.

We enter the studio--wall to wall guitars, keyboards and a whole closet full of homemade stenciled t-shirts. Who’s that sleeping on the floor in the corner, behind the bass rig? Must be stealth drummer Spencer, the elusive elder statesman of the group. “Can you hand me that?” he asks, pointing to a corduroy jacket thrown over a chair. It’s piece three in his vintage corduroy suit. I can’t wait to hear what the band’s been working on, all smiles and handshakes on this day. Anticipation hangs in the air as Joe cues up a tape reel from a late-night jam session, hand rolled cig in his mouth. Gwen’s reclining on her pea green Barcalounger, monogrammed with her initials and covered in clear vinyl. Spencer saunters off to the kitchen to discuss the day’s activities with their manager. Rocky, the band’s mascot mountain goat, follows closely behind. The tension is palpable. I can’t believe I’m the first one to hear the new material!
