The Russell Landing Marina on American Lake honors the service and memory of Admiral James Russell.

Growing up on the lake where he learned to sail, Russell never forgot its importance in his life. After a 40-year career in the Navy -- culminating in his serving as Commander-in-Chief of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) Allied Forces Southern Europe -- he returned to American Lake where he spent the rest of his days working to improve the lives of military personnel.

Within months of his passing in 1996, the command at then Fort Lewis memorialized his national and local service by naming the marina, restaurant and picnic areas in remembrance of his life's contributions.

Open from April 1 through Sept. 30, the marina is a great summer spot to head out onto the lake to fish or to play.

Individuals can rent jet skis, canoes, and paddle, power and pontoon boats. For boat owners, moorage and dry storage slips are available.

For unit or family picnics, a number of pavilions are available for rent, and there are a number of picnic tables in the area.

There is a small, well-stocked shop and friendly, knowledgeable staff that provides customers with a great selection of bait and tackle, fishing poles, refreshments, snacks, toys and life jackets.

Adjacent to the marina is a brand new splash park where children can have fun on a hot summer's day in cool, wet comfort.
