THEY HEART HAITI

South Sound restaurants have been showing support for Haiti in a big way: There was Dockside Bistro's benefit dinner this past Monday, Primo Grill and the Crown Bar donating wine sale monies, and dozens of other fundraising events.

The latest effort will come in the form of two benefits held on Valentine's Day at Paddy Coyne's and Masa.

Paddy Coyne's will be accepting donations for the American Red Cross Sunday, Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. With each donation the donor will receive a $7 promotional card to use at their next visit to Paddy Coyne's, plus a raffle ticket for prize drawings. The downtown Tacoma restaurant suggests you pony up $20.

Masa also will be donating to the Red Cross - 10 percent of all sales on Valentine's Day. DJ Midnight Mike will spin beginning at 6 p.m., and Ben Union and hip-hop artist Darius will join forces for a "ridiculously awesome" performance, according to event organizer Nick Casanova.

TIME FOR A QUICKIE

People mill about, hands in pockets, arms hugged in close to their bodies for warmth. Their breath forms clouds that quickly evaporate in the cold air. It's 12:08 p.m. on a Saturday and Quickie Too's doors have not opened at the predetermined Saturday opening time of noon. Actually, the line is not an uncommon sight for the Hilltop Tacoma vegan restaurant. And it certainly hasn't dissuaded the cult-like foodie fans from lining up outside.

Without the line, this well-established, unassuming restaurant would be easy to drive past without giving it a second thought.

Food is not what you'd typically think of when hearing the word vegan, but it's front and center at Quickie Too. Jamaican spices are used to mimic things such as spicy jerk chicken, and red beans and rice.

In addition, the whole menu has a general soul food vibe. They serve up sweet potatoes, macaroni and yease (yeast instead of cheese - trust me, it's so good), stuffed cabbage, potato salad, rice dishes, wraps, fresh green salads, greens, and some of the best non-meat burgers around.

Everything is made to order at Quickie Too, so patience is a requirement.

Word on the street is that Quickie has soft serve ice cream for dessert in addition to vegan cookies.

Bottom line, though, it's worth the wait. - Jennifer Johnson
