The Top of Tacoma Bar and Cafe has been a popular watering hole in the McKinley district of Tacoma for years, but while popular to those that know it, it's still an unknown for many local diners.  You literally have to pass the Tacoma Dome and work your car over the freeway and uphill to see what all the fuss is about.

Sorry kids, this bar is strictly 21 years of age and older with a bounty of drink specials littering the calendar to include $3 pints each Monday, $2 tall boys on Tuesdays, $2 well drinks every Wednesday, plus two happy hours a day, 2-6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to close.

If you're a "taco guy," then hit up Top of Tacoma on Thursdays for two buck tacos.  And it isn't just one type, Top of Tacoma has seven uniquely different flavors to choose.  Examples include a tilapia taco with Sriracha-sake sauce, a blackened tiger prawn, a chipotle field roast with traditional toppings, or the chorizo with pineapple.

If I had to choose one Top of Tacoma favorite, I lean towards their sandwiches, most noteably the Rainier Ruben with a hard cider cabbage.  I also like the pork belly bahn mi with carrots, jalapenos and pineapple.  Vegetarian diners will also appreciate their eight meatless sandwiches as well.  But, the sandwich that I cannot say no to is the Beast of Burden, a stunning stacking of well-prepared roast beef, melted Havarti cheese, horseradish, caramelized onions, and the Top's signature cherry pepper relish grilled in a Panini press and served with au jus with green onions added like parade confetti.

I must confess that each time I order the Beast I'm tempted to order two, just so that I have leftovers.  It is truly that good. Bottom line? Make your way up, up and up to the Top of Tacoma for a great neighborhood bar with well-crafted food and drink options.
